The "cactus virus"

If you are attracted to cacti, you buy a small cactus almost at every opportunity at the beginning - whether in the plant shop or at a cactus exchange, where like-minded people (mostly) sell their varieties cheaply. One is fascinated by the plants: one has great thorns, the other has its own shape or wonderful flowers. There are enough reasons to find cacti interesting. It's like being infected by a virus. As a result, you will soon have a lot of little prickly friends to admire yourself.

You don't need much for cactus care - I'll try to list the things:

  1. a sunny place protected from the rain z. B. Windowsill, house roofing ...
  2. a commercially available cactus fertilizer
  3. a place in the basement that is around 10°C in winter (can be light or dark)
  4. Love for the cacti
  5. There are species that are not very demanding in culture: Echinopsis, Lobivia, Sulcoreputia - to name a few.

There are great books that are absolutely necessary for a beginner to better understand the cultivation and care conditions:

  • Erich Götz, Gerhard Gröner: Cacti - culture, reproduction, care, lexicon of genera and species
  • Elisabeth Manke: The BLV cactus book - the most beautiful species and their care
  • Ken & Rod Preston-Mafham: Cacti atlas Ulmer Verlag

Society of Austrian Cactus Friends (GÖK)

The Society of Austrian Cactus Friends (GÖK), together with its branch associations, has been a home for ambitious cactus and succulent friends nationwide for many decades. One of these branch associations is the Society of Austrian Cactus Friends - Regional Group of Styria.

Club evening
The Styrian association for lovers of succulent plants, which also includes cactus plants, meets every second Wednesday of the month from 6.30 p.m. for a club evening at the "Zum golden Hirschen" inn in Graz-Andritz. A wide range of specialist lectures and travel reports ensures that the cozy get-together among cactus friends ensures varied and interesting hours. The Styrian Regional Group organizes a large number of nationally and internationally known events on the subject of cacti and is enjoying increasing popularity.
